England Squad: Senior Men’s / Men’s U21s

Role Title: Observational Coach

Estimated number of days commitment: to be agreed depending on existing commitments

One of The FA seven strategic objectives is to be ‘A world-leading education programme for a diverse football workforce’. Both The FA and PFA have put coaching and the development of quality coaches, front and centre of their agenda and are taking positive action to widen the diversity of the coaching talent pool. It’s a major commitment and investment from both organisations to improve female and BAME coach representation within the National teams, creating a better reflection of ethnicity and gender in key positions and providing new pathways for aspiring coaches and players.

One of the key areas of the PFA’s focus over the last decade has been challenging the recruitment procedures in the professional game, aiming to widen the representation and visibility of BAME talent across all areas of football.

The FA has looked at this under-representation and is committed to helping develop individuals to ensure more under-represented coaches are obtaining relevant qualifications and gaining essential experience to challenge for elite and national coaching roles in football.

The long-term aim is to improve the talent pool of not only coaches but those who understand the England DNA and what is expected at international level. Whilst The FA is not a club, it is uniquely placed with the Technical division, including FA Education and the England team operations based at St George’s Park, to provide excellent learning and professional development opportunities.

To gain knowledge and skills in different environments that will enable you to confidently challenge for elite and national coaching roles. This is an unpaid training and development opportunity (although reasonable expenses will be met, as explained below).

You will also support, in collaboration with other National and Specialist Coaches, the development and practical delivery of a comprehensive, world leading coaching strategy. This will include the team tactical and individual technical components to create an inspirational learning experience for players, along with a competitive advantage to England players and teams. During your placement you may spend time with the Head coach but you will also spend time with their team, each placement is unique depending on the successful applicants experience and leaning objectives.

The FA would welcome applications from applicants of BAME origin who are:

  • Aged 18 years or older; and
  • Hold a Pro Licence or currently registered on Pro Licence
  • Experienced in coaching professional footballers in a competitive environment (First Team or U23 at a category 1 club)

Expenses will be covered (travel and subsistence) as well as negotiated costs for clubs where appropriate.

The Football Association Group promotes Equal Opportunities in employment, and welcomes applications from all parts of the community. If you have any particular requirements in respect of the recruitment or interview process please mention this in your covering letter.

For the avoidance of doubt, The FA adopts the BAME classification to refer to members of communities within the UK who identify as ‘other than white’ (which is consistent with the Oxford English dictionary definition of BAME and the ONS definition of “Ethnic Minority (UK)”).
